Western Australia is transitioning to renewable energy - and our community is playing an important part of this change. While new renewable projects can bring changes and challenges that need to be managed, they can also deliver real benefits and opportunities for our local area.
To help support regional communities to benefit from new projects, the State Government, through PoweringWA, released the ‘Community Benefits Guideline’ earlier this year. Here’s what you need to know about the Guideline:
▪️ It sets out an amount of money projects should pay toward the community year.
▪️ Payments start when a project begins operation - and continue until the project closes.
▪️ Funding is pooled in a dedicated community fund and distributed according to a ‘Community Benefits Plan’ developed by local people.
Our Shire is one of four Local Governments that have been selected by PoweringWA to take part in a Community Benefits Plan Pilot. This means we will be among the first in WA to put together a community-driven framework for local benefits funding.
