West Arthur selected for State Government renewable energy community benefits pilot

The Shire of West Arthur has welcomed the Western Australian Government’s release of the Community Benefits Guideline for Large-Scale Renewable Energy Projects, which aims to ensure regional communities share in the benefits of the State’s transition to clean energy.

The Shire has been selected as one of four pilot local government areas to participate in the implementation of the new guideline, alongside the Shires of Narrogin, Dandaragan and Victoria Plains.

Shire President, Cr Karen Harrington said that it is clear the Shire of West Arthur will play an instrumental role in Western Australia’s renewable energy transition.

“Our community is eager to ensure these developments deliver genuine, long-term benefits for local people and the broader region. While these projects present exciting opportunities for economic and social development, they also raise valid questions among residents about the nature and distribution of benefits, long-term impacts, and the legacy we leave for future generations. Community members have voiced concerns about engagement fatigue, inconsistent benefit-sharing approaches, and the need for a clear vision that reflects local priorities. As a Shire, we are proactively initiating conversations with developers, advocating for fair outcomes, and exploring frameworks for community benefit funds. The opportunity to be part of the State Government’s renewable energy community benefits pilot program will assist in achieving a coordinated, strategic approach to harness the full potential of renewable energy in our region.”
