Shire of West Arthur President Issues Statement on Media Attention Surrounding Local Man living in Bus

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Darkan, Western Australia – Shire President, Cr Neil Morrell, has today responded to recent media interest in the above matter.

“The Shire cannot comment on any details of the current proceedings against Mr Reinhold until the matter is determined by the Court,” stated Cr Morrell.

“From a general perspective, the Shire acknowledges that many individuals throughout the State are having difficulty in obtaining suitable or affordable housing. While housing is not a local government responsibility, the Shire is committed to working with relevant authorities, to the extent possible and within the limits of its statutory obligations, to provide and improve housing options within the Shire’s district.

However, the Shire has an obligation to enforce the provisions of legislation administered by it, such as the Caravan Parks and Camping Grounds Act 1995. This legislation is directed towards ensuring that land and buildings are used and occupied lawfully and safely, to manage any potential risks associated with those properties.

Cr Morrell went on to say that, “While the Shire will always endeavour to work cooperatively with residents and ratepayers to seek voluntary compliance, it has a paramount duty to ensure that activities within its district comply with relevant legislation.”
