Shire of West Arthur Australia Day Celebrations 2026

The Shire of West Arthur celebrated Australia Day 2026 with two events: the traditional breakfast and a pool party in the afternoon.

The breakfast, held out at Lake Towerrinning, saw Shire Councillors and staff prepare breakfast for approximately 100 people. While the morning was cool and breezy, it didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the attendees.

After breakfast, the Citizen of the Year awards were presented by Shire President, Cr Karen Harrington. This year saw two awards presented: Active Citizenship and Citizen of the Year.

The Active Citizenship award was presented to the combined Volunteer Bushfire Brigades of Arthur River, Darkan and Duranillin, with the award being accepted by Chief Bush Fire Control Officer Graeme Peirce. The award was given in recognition of the volunteers' efforts during the 2024/2025 bushfire season, particularly during the Dunleath and Arthur River fires. The volunteers give tirelessly to their communities and assist with fires in neighbouring Shires. Congratulations to all the volunteers.

The Citizen of the Year award was given to Shirley Marsh, who has volunteered in the community for over 30 years, most notably with St John's Ambulance and with seniors, including helping them age in place. Shirley was unable to accept the award, as she was busy tending to a local senior. The award was accepted on her behalf by Pam Stockley and Adrian South.

The pool party was held at Darkan Swimming Pool, with approximately 50 people attending. The children did not let the weather stop them from enjoying the water and small inflatables, though the wind was unfortunately too strong for the big inflatable to be used. All attendees enjoyed free entry, a sausage sizzle, free ice cream, and a drink.

The Shire would like to acknowledge the National Australia Day Council and Auspire for their support of these events.
