Renewable Energy in the Shire of West Arthur

There are several renewable energy projects proposed for our local area. While not all of them will go ahead, we know even one project can bring change. But at the same time, new renewable energy projects can deliver new opportunities and benefits for a local community.
To help support regional communities like ours to benefit from new developments, the State Government, through PoweringWA, released the ‘Community Benefits Guideline’ earlier this year.
The Guideline outlines that:
  • Developers should pay a certain amount of money, determined by the size of their project, to the community each year.
  • The community should work together to develop a ‘Community Benefits Plan’ that maps out where this money should be spent.
  • Money is then released from a community fund according to this plan - meaning the community informs how the money is spent.
Our Shire is one of four Local Governments selected by PoweringWA to roll out the Community Benefits Plan Pilot, which is applying the community plan model in a real-world environment. This means we will be one of the first areas in WA to develop local plans for benefits spending.
