26/27 Mitigation Proposal
The Shire is proposing targeted vegetation management works to reduce bushfire risk and improve protection for the Darkan community, surrounding properties, and key infrastructure.
These works are being undertaken to:
- Reduce accumulated fuel loads (grass, scrub and understory vegetation)
- Decrease fire intensity and rate of spread in the event of a bushfire
- Establish and maintain a Hazard Separation Zone between bushland and residential areas
- Improve safe access for firefighting appliances and emergency response
The proposed works may include:
- Slashing of long grass and surface fuels
- Selective vegetation removal (mulching / thinning of understory)
- Maintenance of existing firebreaks and access tracks
- Removal of dead vegetation and ladder fuels
- Hazard Reduction Burning
Works will be undertaken in a targeted and controlled manner to balance bushfire risk reduction with environmental considerations.
