At the Shire of West Arthur’s Ordinary Council Meeting held Thursday 23 March, the Shire President Cr Neil Morrell proclaimed 15-22 April 2023 to be International Dark Sky Week.  International Dark Sky Week helps to raise awareness of light pollution, the dark night sky and the Astrotourism Towns Project.

Cr Morrell said “the experience of standing beneath the Milky Way in the Shire of West Arthur inspires feelings of wonder and awe, and encourages a growing interest in science and nature, especially among young people and visitors to our community”.  He went on to say that “I ask each resident to join me, not only in observing and pondering upon this important week, but also in raising awareness and support for protecting our precious dark sky”. International Dark Sky Week coincides with the total solar eclipse.

The Shire of West Arthur is hosting a free Astrotourism event on Wednesday 26 April at One Gate Farm on Dardadine Rd, which will consist of a presentation by Astrotourism WA, a laser pointer tour of Southern Hemisphere constellations, followed by viewing through telescopes.  The event will run from 6.30pm to 9.00pm.  Food will be available from the Paddy Wagon and camping available from One Gate Farm.  For further event information, check out https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/darkan-dark-sky-stargazing-night-tickets-550311876637
