Local Government Reform

Local Government Reform

All local governments in Western Australian have been asked by the Minister for Local Government to consider voluntary amalgamations and a reduction in the number of councillors.  Responses are due to be submitted to the Minister by 30th September 2009.

SHIRE OF WEST ARTHUR - STRUCTURAL REFORM MEETING

The Shire of West Arthur held a Structural Reform meeting at the Darkan Bowling Club on Thursday 27th August 2009 in relation to the future of the Shire of West Arthur.  The purpose of the meeting was for the community to hear about the reform process and to have input into Council's response to the Minister.

Joanne Burges of WALGA gave an overview of the Reform Process and Bob Smillie of ACIL Tasman, who has been commissioned to report on the costs and benefits of amalgamating the 4WD VROC (which includes the shires of West Arthur, Woodanilling, Williams, Wagin and Dumbleyung), gave an overview of his report.  The ACIL Tasman Final Draft Report is available fom the Shire of West Arthur Office.  For background information please refer to The Journey - Sustainability into the Future which is available from the WALGA website.  www.walga.asn.au/sss/documents/

The meeting was attended by 69 people.  Community members present provided their views to assist Council in determining the best way forward.

At the end of the meeting the following motion was strongly supported:

“That the Shire of West Arthur retain the status quo for as long as possible and if there are any major changes to the current position that Council holds a further public meeting to keep the community informed”
